There are two entirely different cars called Ford Explorer, and only one of them plugs in. The electric Ford Explorer, built in Cologne from 2024 and sold across Europe, has an 11 kW onboard charger and a Type 2 inlet. The American Ford Explorer is a large petrol SUV with no charging socket anywhere on it. If you are on this page for a European electric Explorer, everything below applies. The surprise for most owners is the size: at 4.468 metres it is one of the shortest electric SUVs on sale, which makes cable length easier here than on almost any rival.

The electric Explorer takes a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, with the flap on the offside rear quarter, behind the driver's door. Every UK version is fully electric, so there is no trim in the range without a socket.

Get the 32A single phase cable for home charging. The 11 kW figure is a three phase rating, and a British house is fed by a single phase carrying up to 7.4 kW, which is what the Explorer will draw on a domestic wallbox. Add the 32A three phase lead only if you have access to three genuine phases at a workplace or commercial unit, where an Extended Range car falls from 11 hours 45 minutes to 8 hours.

The 16A cable costs more than it saves here. On the Standard Range battery nine hours of charging turns into eighteen for the sake of thirteen pounds, and on Extended Range it goes past twenty three hours.
