The Mercedes EQS takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and for a UK home the 32A single phase version is the one to buy. It carries 7.4 kW, which is the most any wallbox in a British house can deliver.

The split that matters is Saloon against SUV. The EQS Saloon has an 11 kW onboard charger. The EQS SUV has a 22 kW charger. Mercedes offered a 22 kW charger on the Saloon in Europe, but we have not been able to confirm it was orderable here, so treat a UK Saloon as 11 kW unless you know otherwise.

Neither number changes anything on a driveway. UK houses are single phase, so both cars stop at 7.4 kW on a domestic wallbox. Three phase supplies turn up at some workplaces and public posts, and that is the only place a 22 kW lead pulls ahead. Buy the three phase cable if you plug in at those regularly. If you only ever charge at home, it is headroom the car will never use.

Battery sizes are big either way, so a slow cable costs you real time. Saloon models hold 107.8 kWh usable, rising to 118 kWh from the 2024 facelift. The SUV holds 108 kWh usable, again 118 kWh after the facelift. A 16A lead at 3.7 kW turns one overnight charge into a two night job.

Trim and line make no difference. EQS 450+, 500 4MATIC, 580 4MATIC and the AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ all use the same Type 2 socket and the same 11 kW charger. The SUV 450 4MATIC, 450+ and 580 4MATIC all use the 22 kW unit.

On length, 5m is enough when the car sits beside the charge point with the socket on the near side. Choose 10m if you park nose out, share a post with another car, or want to reach a second bay.

How long does an EQS take to charge at home?

About 16h30m from empty on a 7.4 kW wallbox with a 32A cable, for both the 107.8 kWh Saloon and the 108 kWh SUV. Most owners never run to empty, so a typical overnight session covers a normal week of driving. A 16A lead stretches the same charge to roughly 33h00m.

Does the EQS SUV charge faster than the Saloon?

Only on three phase. The SUV carries a 22 kW onboard charger against the Saloon's 11 kW, which cuts a full charge to 5h30m instead of 11h00m on a three phase supply. Plug either car into a single phase UK wallbox and both draw 7.4 kW and take about 16h30m.

Can I charge an EQS from a three pin plug?

You can, using a Type 2 to 3 Pin lead at 2.3 kW, but a full charge takes roughly 53h00m on a 107.8 kWh battery. Treat it as a backup for holidays or a friend's house rather than your normal method. It is IP67 rated for outdoor sockets.

Should I buy the 5m or the 10m cable?

Take 5m when the EQS parks alongside the charge point and the socket faces it. Go for 10m if you reverse onto the drive, park nose out, or share a post at work. The extra length costs a little more and coils away easily, and it removes any doubt about reach.
