Quick recommendation

Not every Passat charges. The plug-in versions wear a GTE badge on older cars and an eHybrid badge on the current one. A Passat TSI, eTSI or TDI has no socket at all and needs nothing from this page.

Plug-in Passats all use Type 2, so the cable you want is Type 2 to Type 2. What changes across the years is how much the car will swallow. The 2015 to 2019 GTE, saloon or estate, holds 9.9 kWh and takes 3.6 kW. The 2019 to 2022 update raised the pack to 13 kWh, 10.6 kWh of it usable, but left the charger alone at 3.6 kW. For either of those, a 16A Type 2 lead is the sensible purchase and a full charge sits between three and three and a quarter hours.

The 2024 Passat eHybrid is a different proposition. In 204 and 272 forms it carries 19.7 kWh usable and an 11 kW onboard charger, and Britain gets it as an estate only. There is no new generation saloon here. On that car the 32A cable is the one to buy. It brings a full charge to about three hours at home against roughly six on a 16A lead.

Home supplies in Britain are single phase, which caps any house at 7.4 kW no matter what the car claims. The 11 kW figure needs a three phase supply, so it turns up at workplaces and some destination car parks rather than on your driveway. Pair the three phase cable with one of those posts and a full charge drops to around two hours. On a home wallbox that same cable behaves exactly like the single phase 32A one.

Owners of the older GTE often ask whether the dearer cable is a false economy. It is not wasteful or unsafe, it simply does nothing: the charger inside the car sets the pace, and it will not go past 3.6 kW. Put the money into a 10m lead instead if your parking is awkward.

All our Type 2 to Type 2 cables are IP55 rated and covered by a 2 year manufacturer's warranty, with same-day dispatch on working-day orders placed before 2pm.

Volkswagen Passat GTE Charging Cable FAQs

Which cable does a Passat GTE need?

A Type 2 to Type 2 lead. For a 2015 to 2022 GTE, 16A is correct, because those cars top out at 3.6 kW. For a 2024 Passat eHybrid, choose 32A instead: that car accepts 11 kW, and a 16A cable would leave it charging for around six hours rather than three.

Do all Passats have a charging socket?

No. Only the GTE and the newer eHybrid plug in. A Passat TSI, eTSI or TDI runs on fuel alone and has no port. The badge is the giveaway, and trim level changes nothing. If your car is not a GTE or an eHybrid, there is no cable you can buy for it.

How long does a Passat GTE take to charge?

The 2015 to 2019 car, holding 9.9 kWh, takes about three hours on a 16A cable. The 2019 to 2022 version with 10.6 kWh usable needs roughly three and a quarter. The 2024 eHybrid carries 19.7 kWh and fills in about three hours on a 32A cable at a home wallbox.

Which Passat models charge at 11 kW?

The 2024 Passat eHybrid 204 and eHybrid 272, sold here as estates only. Every earlier GTE, saloon or estate, is limited to 3.6 kW. Even on the 2024 car, 11 kW requires a three phase supply, so a single phase home wallbox will hand it 7.4 kW at the very most.

Is there a new Passat GTE saloon in the UK?

No. The current generation Passat reaches Britain as an estate only, so the eHybrid 204 and eHybrid 272 are estates. Older GTE saloons built from 2015 to 2022 do exist on the used market, and those want a 16A Type 2 cable because they charge at 3.6 kW.

Should a Passat owner buy 5m or 10m?

Five metres reaches comfortably when the wallbox sits near the charging flap. Ten metres is the safer default for an estate on a driveway, where the port can end up several car lengths from the unit. Both are IP55 rated and covered by a 2 year manufacturer's warranty.
