16A vs 32A Hook-Up Leads: Which Caravan Lead Do You Need?

Posted by Ware Leads on

Caravan and motorhome hook-up leads are commonly sold with either a 16A or 32A connector. The right choice is determined by the connection available at the campsite, marina or storage location—not simply by the size of the lead.

Start with the supply point

Look at the outlet you are connecting to and identify its connector type and rating. A 16A lead is intended for a compatible 16A connection; a 32A lead is intended for a compatible 32A connection. Do not assume that a larger connector gives your caravan more usable power.

Choose the lead that matches your equipment

  • Check the inlet on your caravan, motorhome or hook-up unit.
  • Check the socket at the campsite or shore-power point.
  • Choose the correct plug-to-socket combination and a practical cable length.
  • Use an adaptor only where it is specifically designed for the two compatible connector types.

Common buying mistakes

Buying the wrong connector, choosing a lead that is too short, or relying on a loose domestic extension lead outdoors can create avoidable problems. A proper hook-up lead should be selected for the location and the equipment being connected.
