How to Choose an Extension Lead: Length, Load and Location
Posted by Ware Leads on
The best extension lead is not necessarily the longest or cheapest option. It is the lead that matches the supply, the equipment being used and the environment.
1. Match the plug and socket
Start by checking both ends. Identify the supply plug, the equipment plug and whether you need a standard extension lead, a site-power lead or a purpose-made adaptor.
2. Choose the shortest practical length
Measure the route and allow enough length for safe positioning. Avoid leaving large coils of cable where they can be damaged or become a trip hazard.
3. Check the intended load and product specification
Read the product information and the instructions for the equipment you plan to use. Do not overload an extension lead or use it for equipment that requires a different connector or specification.
4. Select for the location
Indoor, outdoor, trade and caravan use can require different protection and connector styles. Where moisture, dust, vehicle traffic or regular handling are expected, choose equipment designed for those conditions and keep all connections protected.
