IP44 vs IP66: Choosing Outdoor Electrical Equipment

Posted by Ware Leads on

IP ratings help describe the degree of protection provided by an enclosure against solid objects and water. They are useful when comparing outdoor extension leads, sockets, plugs and connection accessories.

What the two digits mean

The first digit relates to protection from solid objects and dust. The second relates to protection from water. The full rating matters: do not compare products using only the first or second number.

IP44 equipment

IP44-rated equipment is commonly used where protection from splashing water is needed. It can be suitable for many outdoor tasks when used as instructed, but it is not a substitute for correct positioning, cable management and product care.

IP66 equipment

IP66-rated equipment has a higher stated level of protection against dust and powerful water jets. It may be a better fit for more exposed locations, subject to the product instructions and the way the complete connection is assembled.

Choose for the whole connection

The lowest-rated or poorly protected part of an installation can determine its practical resilience. Check the lead, plug, socket, coupler and any enclosure together. Keep connections off the ground where possible and do not use damaged seals, cable glands or covers.

This guide is intended to help you compare product types before ordering. Always check the connector on the equipment or supply you are using, the product instructions and the intended environment before use.
